Bronchitis Remedies - Natural Herbal Home Remedy for Bronchitis Treatment

Acute bronchitis, which typically follows an upper respiratory infection such as a heavy cold or influenza, produces a painful dry cough as the infected bronchi become inflamed. This leads to lots of mucus being produced and the cough becoming looser. The condition can recur and chronic bronchitis is known as the English disease, due to its frequent occurrence in England.

Home remedies for Bronchitis
Bronchitis Treatment using Aromatherapy and Essential Oils
Essential oils, used primarily in steam inhalations (see below), are an excellent way to treat bronchitis. In the acute stage using powerfully antiseptic oils such as Lavender, Eucalyptus, Thyme or Tea Tree will be very useful. This can be backed up by gently rubbing a little diluted Lavender oil on to the chest - use 5 drops in 5ml (1 tsp) of olive oil or similar vegetable oil.

For more chronic symptoms choose from of the following oils which are derived from gums or resins, or simply combine all three in an inhalation.

Benzoin: is most famous as the ingredient in Friar's Balsam; it has a warming and relaxing effect on the bronchi, and aids expectoration of the thick mucus.

FRANKINCENSE: another expectorant, which slows and deepens the breathing as well as being a good antiseptic agent.

MYRRH: strongly anti-infective, helping to loosen the sticky mucus and shift it off the chest.

Herbalism - Herbal Remedies for Bronchitis
There is a whole treasure chest of herbal medicines for different stages or states of bronchitis; if in doubt do seek professional advice. At the beginning, where there may be a feeling of chill, a tea from fresh Ginger (Zingiber officinalis) with perhaps a pinch of Cayenne pepper added will give warmth very quickly. Painful, harsh coughs can be soothed with infusions of Marshmallow leaf (Althea officinalis), Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) and Thyme (Thymus vulgans), or else use White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare), an anti-spasmodic and expectorant remedy. A regular intake of garlic, ideally fresh, not only helps to stimulate the removal of excess mucus in chronic bronchitis, but is one of the most powerful anti-infective agents there is, helping to build resistance to all respiratory infections.

Homeopathy and Bronchitis Treatment
In the acute phase, look at these remedies, but seek qualified treatment if symptoms persist or chest pains set in.

ACONITE: for use in the early stages, with painful, dry cough and much restlessness, with a slight fever.

BRYONIA: for a dry, hacking cough which is made worse by changes in temperature, such as coming into a warm room.

IPECACUANHA: for a spasmodic cough with much rattly mucus on the chest, and a tendency towards vomiting.

PHOSPHORUS: for a hoarse voice, even, going altogether, and a dry tickly cough, with a tight feeling like a band around the chest.

Naturopathy - Natural cures for Bronchitis
Reduce mucus-forming foods: these are primarily dairy products, and also refined carbohydrates such as cakes and pastries. If the weather is damp or foggy, stay indoors, but also avoid rooms being too dry and hot. In chronic cases walking or other exercise in good weather will improve breathing. Hot and cold compresses will really stimulate circulation through the lungs and help breathing.

Treatment for Bronchitis by Home Remedy
Chop 6 cloves of garlic very finely and place them in a bowl over a pan of simmering water with the contents of one small jar of white petroleum jelly (vaseline).

A few drops may be used in hot water as an inhalant. Do not use undiluted on the skin or on a handkerchief where it will be transferred to the nose and thus helps in treating bronchitis.

A tobacco made from Coltsfoot herb was used to relieve bronchitis and asthma but it is in your best interests not to smoke at all.

Drink a mixture of honey, lemon juice and alum.

Natural Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Bronchitis can be serious, and because its symptoms also can indicate pneumonia, medical attention is a must. While you are following your doctor's advice, however, there are natural home remedies that can help relieve some of your symptoms.

Home Remedies From the Cupboard

Almonds. These little cure-all nuts have loads of vitamins and nutrients, and they are said to help everything from mental acuity to sexual vitality. Rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium, almonds are especially known for their healing powers in respiratory illness. So when you're down with bronchitis, eat them in any form (except candy-coated or chocolate-covered). Sliver some almonds and garnish your veggies. They're good in a citrus fruit salad for a little added crunch or rubbed in a little honey, coated with cinnamon, and roasted in a 325 degrees F oven for 10 to 25 minutes.

Honey. To relieve the cough that comes from bronchitis, slice an onion into a bowl, then cover with honey. Allow to stand overnight, then remove the onion. Take 1 teaspoon of the honey, four times a day.

Home Remedies From the Refrigerator

Lemons. These help rid the respiratory system of bacteria and mucus. Make a cup of lemon tea by grating 1 teaspoon lemon rind and adding it to 1 cup boiling water. Steep for five minutes. Or, you can boil a lemon wedge. Strain into a cup and drink. For a sore throat that comes from coughing, add 1 teaspoon lemon juice to 1 cup warm water and gargle. This helps bring up phlegm.

Onions. These are expectorants and help the flow of mucus. Use raw, cooked, baked, in soups and stews, as seasoning, or any way you like them.

Home Remedies From the Sink

Water. Lots and lots of it. The more you drink, the more your mucus will liquefy. This makes it easier to cough out. You can also use water for a steam treatment. Fill the sink with hot water, bend down to it, cover your head with a towel, and breathe in the steam. Add a few drops of eucalyptus, peppermint, or rosemary oil, if you have one of them. These help clear and soothe the respiratory passages.

Home Remedies From the Spice Rack

Bay leaf. Ancient Romans and Greeks loved bay leaves. They believed that this simple herb was the source of happiness, clairvoyance, and artistic inspiration. Whatever the case, it does act as an expectorant and is best taken in tea. To make the tea, tear a leaf (fresh or dried) and steep in 1 cup boiling water.

Warning! Bay leaf tea should not be used during pregnancy, as it may bring on menstruation.

Another bronchitis remedy with bay leaf is to soak some leaves in hot water and apply as a poultice to the chest. Cover with a kitchen towel. As it cools, rewarm.

Ginger. This is a potent expectorant that works well in tea. Steep 1/2 teaspoon ginger, a pinch of ground cloves, and a pinch of cinnamon in 1 cup boiling water.

Mustard. The warmth of an old-fashioned mustard plaster relieves symptoms of many respiratory ailments, including bronchitis. Take 1 tablespoon dry mustard and mix with 4 tablespoons flour. Stir in enough warm water to make a runny paste. Oil the chest with vegetable shortening or olive oil, then spread the mustard mix on a piece of cloth -- muslin, gauze, a kitchen washcloth -- and cover with an identical piece. Apply to the chest. Keep in place until cool, but check every few minutes to make sure it doesn't burn the skin. Remove the plaster if it causes discomfort or burning.

Savory. This potent, peppery herb is said to rid the lungs of mucus. Use it as a tea by adding 1/2 teaspoon savory to 1 cup boiling water. Drink only once a day.

Thyme. This herb helps rid the body of mucus, strengthens the lungs to fight off infection, and acts as a shield against bacteria. Use it dried as a seasoning or make a tea by adding 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon thyme (it's a very strong herb, so you don't need much) to 1 cup boiling water. Steep for 5 minutes and sweeten with honey. If you have thyme oil on hand, dilute it (2 parts olive or corn oil to 1 part thyme oil) and rub on the chest to cure congestion.

Use the preventative tips in this article to help avoid bronchitis. And if you do come down with bronchitis, don't suffer. Combat the cough and congestion with these home remedies.

Home Remedy Treatments for Bronchitis

Until your body has shaken a bronchial infection, there are some home remedies that decrease discomfort and help your body heal:

Humidify your environment. Believe it or not, coughing is actually good for you. It's the body's way of eliminating the infection that causes bronchitis. So instead of stifling a cough with an over-the-counter suppressant, help it along by using a warm- or cool-mist humidifier to add moisture to the air. (Take care to use and clean the humidifier according to the manufacturer's instructions.) The added humidity will help bring the sputum (matter that is coughed out of the body) up and out of the body. Standing in a steamy shower with the bathroom door closed, keeping a pan of water at a slow boil on the stove (never leave it unattended!), and using a tea kettle to shoot out warm, moist air can also help loosen and bring up phlegm. And if you have a few drops of peppermint or eucalyptus oil to add to the water, these can be quite soothing.

Bronchitis and Smoking
Smoking is a habit that is continually under fire for its negative impact on a person's health -- and rightly so.

Smoking has been proven to be a significant contributing factor in emphysema, lung cancer, heart disease, and several other serious illnesses. It leaves you more vulnerable to acute bronchitis and other respiratory infections; aggravates any such infection that does take hold; and slows your body's ability to heal.

Because a smoker's bronchial tubes are already irritated, any additional inflammation caused by acute bronchitis may require medical attention. Smoking is also the primary cause of chronic bronchitis, which is an ongoing irritation of the lining of the bronchial tubes marked by a perpetual cough that brings up mucus, tightness in the chest, and difficulty breathing.

Needless to say, refraining from smoking or at least cutting way back is essential when battling a case of acute bronchitis. To treat or prevent chronic bronchitis, quitting for good and avoiding exposure to other people's cigarette smoke are essential.

Drink plenty of liquids. Taking in extra liquids helps keep the sputum more fluid and therefore easier to expel. It doesn't really matter what type of liquid you drink, although tea, soup, and other warm liquids may feel better than cold ones. As a bonus, warm fluids may also soothe the irritated throat that may result from all that coughing.

Gargle with warm salt water. Gargling with salt water may provide a double dose of relief by soothing the inflammation in the throat and by cutting through some of the mucus that may be coating and irritating the sensitive throat membranes. It only takes one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water; too much salt causes burning in the throat, and too little is ineffective. Gargle as often as needed, but be sure to spit the salty water out after gargling.

Rest, rest, rest. Since your bout with bronchitis probably followed on the heels of a cold or the flu, you may find it hard to sit still any longer. But walking around with bronchitis will only make you feel worse and slow your body's ability to fight the infection, so you'll need to take it easy a little longer. Those who won't be exposed to your germs will probably be thankful, too.

Take aspirin or ibuprofen to relieve the chest pain. If a bout with bronchitis produces muscle pain in the chest, these anti-inflammatory medications may provide some relief. Acetaminophen does not have an anti-inflammatory effect and so may be less helpful. (Because of the risk of deadly reaction called Reye's syndrome, don't give aspirin to children; acetaminophen should be used instead.) For a list of precautions to take when using over-the-counter analgesics, click here.

Use a cough remedy as a last resort. Remember, coughing is your body's way of driving out the infection and keeping your breathing passages clear. The best cough remedies for bronchitis contain guaifenesin, which helps bring up sputum. But if you're at the end of your rope and can't bear another minute of hacking, especially if it's been keeping you from getting the sleep you need to recover, you can try a medicine that contains the cough suppressant dextromethorphan. Take it only as often as absolutely needed. Check with your doctor if you are unsure. Combination products should generally be avoided; decongestants, antihistamines, and alcohol (common ingredients in combination products) have no role in the treatment of coughs and may even increase discomfort by causing side effects. Most of the candy-type cough drops act as demulcents on the throat; in other words, their soothing properties are due largely to their sugar content.

Stay out of harm's way. With bronchitis you're at risk for picking up another infection. Avoid crowds, children with colds, smoky rooms, and contact with anyone who has a cold or flu. Wear gloves or a mask if you have to, and wash your hands often.

Keep an eye out for complications. While letting nature take its course is generally the best treatment for acute bronchitis, complications can sometimes occur, so you'll need to stay alert for signs that it's time to see your doctor. The most worrisome complications include pneumonia, sinus infection, and ear infection, all of which need to be treated with prescription antibiotics. Signs that one or more of these complications may be present include a persistent high fever (not a typical characteristic of bronchitis), severe shortness of breath, prolonged coughing spells or a cough that lasts more than four to six weeks, severe chest pain, pain behind the eyes, or ear pain. Be on the lookout for blood in your sputum or sputum that changes dramatically in color or consistency, and report it to your doctor. In addition, tell your doctor if you suffer frequent bouts of bronchitis, since you may be suffering from a more serious respiratory problem that requires medical treatment.

Natural Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Bronchitis refers to the inflammation of the mucous membrane
lining the bronchial tubes within the lungs. Bronchitis may be
acute or chronic. In chronic cases, the disease is of long
duration and more serious.

Due to inflammation in the bronchi, large quantities of mucus
are secreted and expelled as phlegm. This phlegm is sticky, semi
fluid and may even be purulent. The patient suffers from fever,
experiences some difficulty in breathing, and has a cough.
Other symptoms are hoarseness, pain in the chest and loss of
appetite.

An important cause of bronchitis is smoking. Excessive smoking
irritates the bronchial tubes and lowers their resistance, so
that they become vulnerable to germs breathed in from the
atmosphere. Other causes are living or working in a stuffy
atmosphere, use of drugs to suppress earlier diseases, and
hereditary factors. Changes in weather and environment hasten
the onset of the disease.
