Colic - Natural Herbal Home Remedy for Colic Treatment

Colic is the term used to describe spasmodic bouts of cramping pains, especially in the bowel which often associated with trapped gas; see Flatulence. Colic is especially common in babies. The symptom of Colic may be related to tension generally, but if there are other digestive disturbances, do seek professional advice. It is always a sensible precaution to seek medical advice where babies are concerned.

Home remedies for Colic
Aromatherapy - Gentle massage of the abdomen, in a clockwise direction, using oils of Chamomile, Fennel or Peppermint will help in Colic.

Herbalism - For an occasional attack of Colic, use hot teas of Catmint, Chamomile, Fennel, Ginger or Peppermint.

Using aromatic seeds like Aniseed, Caraway, Dill or Fennel in food or simply chewing few of the seeds after a meal can help a lot if you are prone to colic after eating. If the problem is frequent, get professional treatment.

Homeopathy -

CHAMOMILLA: especially good for colicky babies, or teething infants; the bloated abdomen tends to be improved by local warmth, such as a hot water bottle.

MAGNESIA PHOSPHORICA: if warmth, pressure over the abdomen and walking about ease the discomfort, but burping does not.

Nux VOMICA: for colic brought on by over-eating or drinking alcohol; symptoms eased by sitting or lying down, and worse if upright.

Naturopathy - In most cases local warmth over the lower abdomen helps; a hot water bottle is the easiest method. Internally, herbal teas, as detailed above, will give the best relief, as they not only reduce spasm but aid digestion too. If frequent colic occurs, do look at how fast you eat, whether you curl up into a comfortable chair after a meal, or if your diet has a lot of fatty, spicy foods or dairy produce. If any of these apply, try to change that pattern and see if the colic improves without needing other treatment; if not get advice. Often it is most helpful simply to eat meals in a more relaxed way, rather than gulping food down while "on the run".
